Kinds of Qatl (Murder) in Urdu and English
Under the Pakistan Penal Code
There are four types of Qatl (murder) under the Pakistan Penal Code:
1. Qatl-i-Amd
Section 302(b) of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC)
An intentional act of killing where the human body is struck, wounded, or subjected to pain leading to death.
- Death as Qisas (retribution)
- Death or imprisonment for life (IOL) as Tazir (discretionary punishment)
- 25 years of imprisonment as Tazir
2. Qatl Shibh-i-Amd
Section 315 of PPC
A criminal act intended to wound a person, resulting in death.
Punishment under Section 316:
- Liable to Diyat (compensation)
- 25 years of imprisonment as Tazir
3. Qatl-i-Khata
Section 318 of PPC
An unintentional act of killing where there is no intent to kill or wound, resulting in death by mistake.
Punishment under Section 319:
- Diyat
- If the act is rash and negligent, up to 5 years of imprisonment in addition to Diyat
- For Qatl-i-Khata by rash or negligent driving: Diyat, 10 years of imprisonment
4. Qatl bis Sabab
Section 321 of PPC
A criminal act not intended to kill but resulting in death due to the act.
